What would make a 4-cylinder engine sound like a diesel?

I have a 00` Chevy Cavalier with 187,000+ miles on it. The engine has recently started sounding God-awful loud inside the car when I get up to about 45 mph and higher. It still idles fine and seems to be otherwise healthy except for the awful racket. I’ve had the exhaust system checked/corrected already. Any ideas? Thanks a bunch!
PS. It sounds about the equivalant of a diesel engine if that helps!
