what would cause a diesel engine to get air into the fuel?

first harley 76 asked:

My sister’s boyfriend is trying to sell me a chevrolet truck which has a diesel engine in it. Told me that it’ll run fine for about a mile, and then it shuts down. Said that it keeps getting air in the lines, and after the air is bled off, it’ll start and run but only for a short time again. I’m thinking that it’s the fuel pump, but not sure. Say’s that he spent over $1000 trying to get it fixed at the dealership, (new filters, lines, ect.), with no luck.
Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Can I put diesel engine oil in a gas engine car?

Engineer Dave asked:

I got a good deal on some engine oil (in gallon containers) meant for diesel engines. The oil meets specification CJ-4. I have a Ford E-150 van with a 5.7 liter V8 engine. Will this oil be okay? I figured that diesel engines have a harder life due to the high compression, but I wonder how this oil compares with the gasoline engine oil meeting API service SM/CF. Thanks

Washington, DC (February 3, 2009) – Consumers that invested in new clean diesel technology last year are now realizing significant federal tax benefits from their diesel purchase decision. According to the Internal Revenue Service, the new generation of clean diesel cars are eligible for federal tax credits ranging from $900 to $1800. The five clean diesel cars (see chart) join seven 2009 hybrid models as eligible for the Alternative Motor Vehicle tax credit.
