Diesel Engine

I just had a full service on my diesel engine car and the next day when I checked the oil it is black. I confronted the mechanic who did the change oil and insisted that this is normal with diesel engines. Is it true?

My sister’s boyfriend is trying to sell me a chevrolet truck which has a diesel engine in it. Told me that it’ll run fine for about a mile, and then it shuts down. Said that it keeps getting air in the lines, and after the air is bled off, it’ll start and run but only for a short time again. I’m thinking that it’s the fuel pump, but not sure. Say’s that he spent over $1000 trying to get it fixed at the dealership, (new filters, lines, ect.), with no luck.
Does anyone know what the problem could be?

I got a good deal on some engine oil (in gallon containers) meant for diesel engines. The oil meets specification CJ-4. I have a Ford E-150 van with a 5.7 liter V8 engine. Will this oil be okay? I figured that diesel engines have a harder life due to the high compression, but I wonder how this oil compares with the gasoline engine oil meeting API service SM/CF. Thanks

The reason i’m asking is because i keep looking at some pickups for sale with diesel motors in them with over 100k+ miles on them and still selling for big bucks!! How many miles is considered “a lot” for a diesel engine??
These are all good answers.I guess i never really thought of the bigger picture if a vehicle was over 100k miles on it.No doubt that some of the other drivetrain may be bad after all those miles and not just worrying about the engine alone.Thanks to everyone.I will let this question go up for a vote.Thanx.

It still idles fine and seems to be otherwise healthy except for the awful racket. I’ve had the exhaust system checked/corrected already. Any ideas? Thanks a bunch!
PS. It sounds about the equivalant of a diesel engine if that helps!
